Strategic Planning

Hoshin Kanri

Hoshin Kanri is a technique for Strategy Deployment used in many industries.  Having clear strategy, goals, objectives and cascading these to the business in a meaningful and achievable way is critical to achieving enterprise alignment and progress towards Operational Excellence.

How it works

1.     HAVE A VISION

2.     DEFINE BREAKTHROUGH OBJECTIVES FOR NEXT 3-5 YEARS THAT WILL HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR VISION

3.     IDENTIFY WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO DO THIS YEAR TO PROGRESS TOWARDS THESE OBJECTIVES

4.     DEPLOY ANNUAL OBJECTIVES

                         a.    SET TARGETS, MEASURES AND OWNERSHIP FOR EACH ACTIVITY

                         b.    SHARE THIS WITH NEXT LEVEL OF THE BUSINESS - GET FEEDBACK (ADJUST AS NECESSARY)

5.     IMPLEMENT ANNUAL OBJECTIVES

6.     REVIEW - MONTHLY

7.     REVIEW - ANNUAL

The key is the sharing of the annual objectives with the business using a 'catchball' technique'.  ‘Catch Ball’ is the Americanised term for how to share the proposed objectives / ideas on the X-matrix with next level managers - who then feedback on how they could deliver these and make new suggestions or changes based on their own thoughts and discussion with their staff.  The term is related to the idea of throwing a baseball between two players.

“It is this iterative process of discussing and debating plans and targets at each level until consensus is reached, along with methods for meeting the goal, which ensures that the total organisation is committed to the same goals”
